Ranging from $150 - $250, these dresses are sleek, stylish, and incredibly affordable. Bridesmaid Look Book: All Dressed in White

The Royal Wedding has got us thinking: why can't the bridesmaids wear white too? We understand that the bride is the center of attention, etc. but in a way, having your bridesmaids dressed in white makes them blend in rather than stand out in their bright colors. It's a classy and elegant approach to dressing your bridesmaids, and may be preferred by brides who are into neutral shades or want to keep things simple. Here are some ideas:

Keep it short and sweet in this knee length chiffon dress from BHLDN. We love the sheer neckline and sweet bow detailing, and just wish they had this in a miniature version for the flower girl! Of course, just make sure your shade of white dress doesn't clash with your maids!

For a sleek, modern look, dress your girls in this simple sequined trim dress by Ralph Lauren. It's a wonderful compliment to a more minimalist bride, with just a bit of dazzle to make it more than your every day white dress. This is definitely a great look if you're going for an icy hot winter wedding.

Of course, you don't need to dress all in white. Throwing on a fun print is a great way to add some color without cluttering up your all white theme. In our opinion, this look seems best fit for when you just have one bridesmaid, or if you want to make your maid of honor stand out and leave the rest of the maids in all white.

Similarly, dress your girls in white (or off white) but add an all-over pattern to set them apart. We love this retro style dress from Mango, and think it's perfect for low key spring or summer weddings.

This basic pleated skirt dress is perfect for a casual summer wedding. It reminds us of the black and white look at the mom's wedding in Because I Said So, which can be elegant and sexy or simple and casual.

This may be one of our favorite dresses of the lot. It's short and sassy, with lots of pretty details around the neckline to create a charming overall look. Plus, this dress works for all seasons and wedding styles, so you can dress it up or down with the right hairstyle and jewelry.

If you haven't noticed, almost all of our selections are cocktail length, as choosing a floor length white gown for your bridesmaids can be very tricky. We think you can only really put it off if (1) the dress is much more simple than the wedding dress and (2) the bride has a lot of confidence.  For instance, this simple floor length gown from J. Crew (which is actually a wedding gown), would look great with a fuller or more detailed wedding dress. It's all about making them different enough so that the bride stands out. If Kate and Pippa could pull it off, so can you!

Saira's BHLDN Dream Wedding

Now that you saw Jen's "dream wedding", it's time for Saira to share. While we both have similar styles, Jen's look is a bit more soft and romantic, while Saira's can be more casual or hip. The wonderful thing about BHLDN is that it encompasses both our styles, and everything in between, to create unique bridal fashion that everyone can enjoy.

    The Dress:
Traditional wedding gowns are gorgeous, but not for everyone. If you're a hippie chick or love the vintage look, then this burnished organza gown is perfect for you. It has a bronze sequined bodice which adds some personality and color to the dress, without being overwhelming or gaudy. The five tiers of silk create a wonderful silhouette, perfect for gracefully swishing down the aisle.

    The Jewelry:

Because the neckline of the organza gown is so embellished, we suggest wearing a bracelet rather than a necklace or earrings, in order to avoid too much clutter in the neck region. We think these simple moonstone bangles are a perfect compliment, dressing up your bare arms with just a touch of gold.

    The Shoes:

These peep toe sandals would work for both the brides and bridesmaids (below), adding some color to both ensembles.

    The Accessory:

If you can't tell already, a pea / lime green is Saira's accent color of choice.  It would look great with the bridesmaid dresses (below) and tie the whole look together.

    The Bridesmaids:
If the bride is dressed simply, then so should the bridesmaids. This short and sweet pleated dress is wonderfully simple, but chic! It is in the same cream colored family as the organza gown, with a pea green sash to add some color. The chiffon neckline gives it a vintage feel, making the bridesmaid the prim little sister to the free spirited bride.

    Happy wedding, dolls!

Jen's BHLDN Dream Wedding

If you read our blog regularly you may have noticed we tend to focus on items from a handful of stores that we find stylish and unique.  One of our favorites is Anthropologie, so, you can imagine our excitement to hear that  Urban Outfitters (the overarching company for Anthro, Free People, etc.) has launched a brand new BRIDAL LINE called BHLDN (pronounced "Beholden")!  Although we agree the name is pretty terrible, we can ignore that small detail because the clothes and style is simply wonderful. To share the wonder that is BHLDN, we've decided to put together our "dream weddings" based on what we found while exploring the new site. Here is "Jen's Dream BHLDN Wedding".  Be sure to check back next week for Saira's BHLDN picks:

    The Dress:
Be a carefree, bohemian goddess in this Cascading Goddess Gown. Light, airy, and flowing, this dress suits Jen's relaxed and romantic style and is perfect for an outdoor garden or beach wedding.

    The Jewelry:

Sweet and delicate, these tiny gold floral studs, accented with freshwater pearls, are the perfect understated accessory to the whimsical and  enchanting gown above.

    The Shoes:
These bronze shoes, with pretty floral cutouts, go along nicely with the gold and cream tones to create a look that is earthy and ethereal.

    The Accessory:
Sticking to neutrals, this kisslock clutch is just the right combination of bohemian and romantic with its brass, kind of rustic looking, floral and pearl applique and soft, muted taupe/grey color .

    The Bridesmaids:

Why should the bride get to have all the fun? This blush pink dress would compliment the bohemian bride nicely and add a subtle pop of color to the ensemble.  This dress is features beautiful sequins, velvet, and fun appliques all in a silhouette that is practical and a material that is light and comfortable.

    Offbeat brides, rejoice!

Wedding Themes: Green Thumb Love

It's feeling a lot like spring, so let's celebrate the warm(er) weather with inspiration from a favorite spring activity: gardening. Gardening wedding themes can be quirky and stylish, perfect for the eco-chic couple who loves the great outdoors. Plus, gardens come in all types and styles from veggie to rose to wildflower and beyond so you can really use any color scheme you want, and mix and match your plants and flowers to create a very romantic escape.

Show your love of all things green with simple floral invitations. You can create a theme, with your save the date, invite, and thank you cards all portraying a different type of flower, creating an informal but very pretty look.

As a favor / place setting, use tiny potted plants. We think potted bamboo would be a great choice, but you can opt for something more leafy, or floral. This is a lovely way to add some color to your table settings, and give something nice for your guests to walk away with.

Instead of flowers, how about planted grass as a table setting? You can adorn it with smaller flowers, or keep it green and simple.  This is an especially attractive choice if you and your guy aren't into florals, and it has a clean and modern edge to it.

Have a fragrant walk down the aisle holding a herbal wedding bouquet. We're partial to lavender, but thyme and oregano make equally fragrant and flattering additions to your wedding bouquet. The more green, the better!

Wearing a boutonniere is not every guy's dream, so make it subtle, like this mint boutonniere. Not only does it look chic, but he can chew on this to freshen his breath before the big kiss!

Make your  cake look like something our of a fairy tale with little birdies hanging on delicate branches. We especially like the "tree stump" serving platter, which really brings the look together.

Look like a faerie princess walking down the aisle with delicate flowers adorning your hair in lieu of a veil. This look is especially great with with soft curls or a loose updo, and is perfect for a laidback, carefree bride with a fun sense of style.

Winter Wedding Wonderland

We've already begun exploring the beauty of winter weddings in our Color Day posts, but here's a more in-depth look at all the wonderful options available to you on your big day. There are many things that come to mind when you think of winter: snow, ice, hot cocoa, mittens, sleighs... so why not incorporate these ideas into your decor?

Walk down a snow covered aisle by decorating with a white carpet, white chairs, and white flowers. The white on white look creates an elegant and pristine setting for your wedding vows that you will remember for the rest of your life.

A lovely idea is to use Christmas ornaments as place card holders! While we're partial to this delicate snowflake design, you could incorporate your wedding colors, add brighter designs, or engrave your names or wedding date to create a one-of-a-kind wedding favor.

If you're not into florals, have allergies, or are just tired of making choices, ditch the traditional and opt for the pine cone bouquet. It's seasonal, unique, and perfect for a more understated and earthy couple. A more common approach is to incorporate pine cones in your arrangement, but we're all for new ideas and there is something very lovely and down-to-earth about carrying all pine cones. Just be careful when tossing your bouquet!

Have fun with your wedding photos and throw on some woolen mittens! It looks very cute, keeps you warm, and you can incorporate your wedding colors so that it all ties together. In fact, get pairs for your whole bridal party... they'll thank you the next morning when they're scraping ice off their cars!

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow... on your cake! A snowflake design on your cake is such a simple and charming way to add some flair to your dessert.  While you can go for a more bold approach, we love the delicate snowflakes and how they add just a bit of texture to the icing.

While you'll probably serve hot cocoa at the wedding, how about giving it away as a wedding favor? We love these jars of hot chocolate with little bags of heart shaped marshmallows, but we're especially in love with the packaging!

While winter weddings are beautiful, then can be downright frigid! This is especially the case if you plan on taking photos outside, or your ceremony and reception are at different venues. To stay warm, but still look every bit the bride, throw on a faux fur shawl or coat, which is both stylish and practical. Better yet, get some for your bridesmaids too!

Okay, we're not going to lie... we think ice sculptures are a little over the top. Beautiful, yes... but over the top. But if your heart is set on an ice sculpture, then a winter wedding is the perfect setting for it because, let's face it, having an ice sculpture of a snowflake is much more original than the usual two hearts intertwined.

Not a fan of all white or ice blue? Add some color to your wedding with this gorgeous bouquet full of flora and peacock feathers, with just a touch of holly. The warm, vibrant colors is perfect for a less traditional winter wedding, but is still very seasonal. Plus, Martha Stewart approves!

A beautiful sight, we're happy tonight...

Color Day: Forest Green and Gold

To Drink or Not to Drink, That is the Question

Today's post goes out to all you couples currently trying to decide on beverage options for your wedding.  People love weddings for many reasons: watching two people form an eternal bond, spending time with friends and families, having an excuse to dress up, the food, and of course... the open bar. Traditionally, weddings have always involved an open bar, but we've noticed a lot of couples debating this issue due to money, logistics, etc. Maybe you or someone you know is currently facing this dilemma and trying to work out what is the best option for them. If you don't drink, and your friends or family don't drink, is an open bar necessary? Here are some options to mull over:

    1. Open Bar, Baby! The most popular choice at weddings is to have an open bar. Whether your venue has a bar on site, or you stock your own drinks, most couples opt for this choice because it is the most convenient  and certainly the most appealing to your guests as it lets you friends and family really relax and let loose. So, obviously we can tell you the pros, but the cons? First, when drinks are free flowing it is hard to control how much people take in and can lead to some very drunk guests.  And second, this option is expensive and depending on how you choose to do it, be it included in the cost per person or as a running tab for the night, it can really up the total cost of a wedding pretty quickly.

    2. Cash Bar, Ca-Ching! This option works best if you're holding your wedding at a venue that has a bar built in, like a restaurant or hotel and does not let you supply your own liquor. Your guests can drink as little or as much as they want, and there's no pressure on you because you aren't paying for a drop. This option is preferable for a couple who is not into drinking, has friends and family who choose not to drink, or just want to cut down on costs in general. Keep in mind that even though you'll cut costs your guests might consider this to be "cheap" and charging your guests for drinks when they aren't expecting it is a bit rude and tacky. Cash bars are not the norm and if your guests are like us, they won't even think about bringing cash to the wedding... unless it's sealed in an envelope for the bride and groom.

    3. Middle Ground: The best of both worlds?  Maybe. A friend of ours went to a wedding where drinks were free during cocktail hour, but afterwards it was a cash bar only. Apparently that didn't go over very well with all the guests, as many of them left after cocktail hour! While those were some very rude guests, switching from open bar to cash only in the middle of your wedding may be a little confusing.  If you do plan on doing something like this, it may be a good idea to let people know ahead of time so they can prepare (wedding websites are great for these types of announcements!!).   Or, a better middle ground may be to provide free champagne to your guests for the toast, or place a bottle of wine or champagne on each table, and then also have a cash bar for anything additional.

    4. No Booze! If you and your groom don't drink, and your family doesn't drink, then why even serve alcohol? A lot of couples choose not to serve any alcohol at their wedding due to their religious, cultural, or lifestyle choices. If the wedding is at a hotel or restaurant, where a bar is otherwise available, this is really no different than having a cash bar. But if you're having your wedding at an alternative venue (i.e. museum, garden, park) then this will leave your guests high and dry. While you shouldn't have to change your preferences for your guests you should remember that they are probably shelling out a nice chunk of change to be there with you and it may be helpful and considerate to give them a heads up so they can plan accordingly (pre-game). As long as there is due notice, we don't see having a dry wedding as being a huge problem. After all, in the end, the guests are there for the bride and groom, not the gin and tonic.

Conclusion: We understand how expensive a wedding is, and particularly an open bar.  But, will your guests really have an understanding of costs?  We doubt it... unless they were recently married themselves.  We're a couple of classy ladies over here at PDR and so we think that offering your guests free beverages is the kind thing to do even if you yourself are not a drinker.  But, that doesn't mean that you need to go crazy and offer them Grey Goose martinis. Offering free drinks but limiting the options is the easiest way to ensure that your budget doesn't get thrown to the wind and your guests don't think your cheaping out on them. So, if you simply can't afford to splurge with a full bar, we suggest serving wine, champagne, and beer, and leaving the rest out completely. Or, if you really want to personalize things, you can add a mixed drink as a signature cocktail!  In the end anything you provide will be appreciated and you'll most certainly be seen as a gracious host.

    Cheers!

Color Day Themes: Rustic Romance

Autumn in the Northeast is a beautiful time of year when the leaves on our trees glow with brilliant reds, yellows, and oranges.  Now, as we've said before, though coordinating and found together in nature, these hues can sometimes seem a little juvenile or hokey when put together as part of your decor. Sometimes the easiest way to gear up for Fall is to think "rustic".  Although rustic details are actually beautiful any time of year, they are particularly heartwarming in the fall.  Maybe it's because fall brings about a renewed connection with nature for many people or maybe it's because the smell of fall reminds us how much we love to layer, but whatever it is there is really nothing like the cozy and comfortable feeling of a rustic fall wedding.  Lucky for you, rustic details are easy!  Add a few loose flowers or candles to a mason jar, utilize branches and leaves, keep stationary simple, and add down home touches like pies or jam and you'll be all set!

Wedding Style: Hauntingly Gorgeous Goth

It's finally here!  With Halloween just two days away, this post concludes our creepy, kooky, mysterious, and spooky series.  When planning for your Halloween event it is not always necessary to include ghosts, pumpkins, witches and the like. If those things seem a little too silly and childish for you then the best alternative for you would be to think in terms of Gothic style.  Instead of ghouls and spider webs you get roses and lace.  The key players in this motif are black and dark, blood red, candles, ornate damask prints, and lace.  These may not be the most traditionally beautiful spaces, but there is something eerily enchanting about this type of decor that we just can't seem to resist.

Horror movies always take place in the dark, which means you need candles! Candles are a great way of adding light and ambiance to your venue, and the type of candles you choose can really shape the theme of your wedding. You can opt for heavy pewter candelabras with tall, thin candles, or large pillar candles to give it a Gothic feel.

We truly believe that your choice in flowers really sets your wedding theme, which is why we think these black calla lilies are perfect if you're going for a dark, Gothic theme.  Lilies are often related to funerals and death, but traditionally they signify innocence and purity! Regardless, they are beautiful. If you're not into the lilies, however, then opt for black roses as a nice twist on tradition.

This Gothic wedding cake proves that beauty is in the details.  Seriously, how gorgeous is this cake?! It simple, but so detailed! Covered in swirls, vines and flowers, this cake really helps evoke the feelings of love and passion and it just looks too good to eat!

Or, for something even more dramatic (did you think that was possible?) check out this bloody masterpiece.  It's gorgeous in that American Beauty meets True Blood meets Twilight kind of way.

The first thing you think of when you think of horror and Gothic style are skulls, and we agree with that sentiment.  However, as far as your wedding goes, you may want to hold back on the skulls, as it can be a little too kitschy and Hot Topic for our tastes.  With that said, we think you can use skulls in your decor to add a subtle and interesting look, without coming off as too Avril Levine. Try this silver skull place card holder, for example. It's small, discrete, and tasteful (as far as skulls go), plus it's practical!

Antique rings are both unique and beautiful!  This antique Edwardian ring is an intricate little work of art and would be a perfect engagement ring for the off-beat or Gothic bride.

Sexy & sultry, the birdcage veil is a must have for a modern Gothic wedding.  There is something about it that is just so mysterious and alluring.  Plus, the feathers on top really help to give this a costume-y Halloween feel.

Unique guest books are always fun!  This ultra eerie book and feather pen are a beautiful and unique way incorporate the Halloween theme into your event.  The torn pages are a nice touch and create an aged look and the matte finish on the frame and table certainly add to the drama.

The Goth bride can't just wear any old dress - she needs a dress with character, something enchanting and a little different. Luckily Claire Pettibone has such a great eye for romantic details and this dress from her 2009 Fall collection is perfect for our post today.  Having a Halloween wedding doesn't have to mean costumes and scary make-up, it can be really feminine and pretty if done the right way.

    Double, double toil and trouble.

    XOXO

    Jen & Saira
